Bowline Knot
The Bowline knot is one of the most widely used knots for creating a secure fixed loop at the end of a rope or line. It is valued because it:
Creates a loop that does not tighten under load
Is relatively easy to untie after use
Can be tied quickly and reliably with practice
Common uses include:
-
Sailing and boating, such as attaching a halyard to a sail or fastening a jib sheet to a clew
-
Securing light loads
-
Tying down small aircraft, as recommended by the Federal Aviation Administration
-
Rescue and utility work where a non-slipping loop is needed
"One limitation is that the Bowline can loosen or capsize if repeatedly shaken, cyclically loaded, or improperly dressed. Because of this, it is generally not recommended for life-safety or climbing applications unless backed up with an additional stopper knot and used within accepted safety practices". According to knots3d.com.
A common memory aid for tying the Bowline is:
“The rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole.”
This is one of the 6 knots that Cadets must master for promotion board review.
